Mountain Biking the Eastern Sierra
A good mixture of terrain, exceptional scenery and comfortable temperatures averaging in the 70’s during the summer months makes Mammoth the ideal place for mountain bike enthusiasts. The Inyo National Forest offers miles and miles of groomed trails and paved roads where you can test your skills, or just cycle distance at a moderate pace.
During the summer months, the Mammoth Mountain ski slopes are transformed into a challenging mountain bike paradise. There are trails for all ability levels of riders. They offer more than 85 miles of groomed single-track trails and the ski lifts will transport you and your bike to the 11,053 foot summit for the ride of a lifetime. The scenic gondola and bike park shuttle, which begins its route at the Village area provides uphill access to the Adventure Center at the Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge area for mountain bikers to begin their adventure. Tickets are $10 – $35, and the trails are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The trails provide picnic areas and are patrolled by bike rangers to assist where needed.
Horseshoe Lake Trail is 1.2 miles and is recommended for beginners. Horseshoe Lake is located at the end of Lake Mary Road and the trailhead can be found at the campground area. As you loop around the perimeter of the lake, you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views of snow-capped backcountry peaks. Several bridges cross inlets and the dense forest offers good shade with the trail being mostly flat terrain on a firm surface.
Panorama Loop near June Lake Junction is for the intermediate rider and provides grand views of Mono Lake. 10.5 miles of grated dirt roads, this route consists of three consecutive loops. The vistas overlook the Mono Craters, which exhibit some of the most exemplary volcanic phenomena in the area.
